Salvage Operation

Yaakov ibn Saruuma abu Dhana, Lamech ben Nabal, Grandinar, and Moishe Pipik were hired by Prefect Anders Solmor to retrieve a magical safe box from the Empress of the Waves, a ship that belonged to his family and that had gone missing soon after his parents had been murdered. He hoped it might have some clue as to who killed them and why. He offered the party 600 sps to split and a claim to any booty found on the ship, after his perusing them to see if there were family heirlooms. The magical safe was exempt from this, but the ever generous prefect would end up giving the party a 10% share of it in the end.

Unbeknown to Solmor, the Yaakov had been approached the night before by Xa'at Kirk, telling him that he already knew the offer was coming, that the box held evidence that Anders Solmor had been the one to kill his parents, and that it held the promissory notes for 100,000 gps redeemable at a temple of Marduk, but requiring special knowledge to cash in - knowledge only he had. Kirk suggested the party take the job, claim the box was lost , and bring it to him instead. He would cash in the notes, and then split the proceeds with them after a 10% finder's fee for the people who got him the info. The party was also free to do what they want with the information about Solmor. should evidence of his wrongdoing be found. Furthermore, he claimed a magical scimitar an artifact of Malekh called "Bloodstar" might be found onboard and he wanted that for himself in return for the info.

Traveling to Brackwater (with a brief interruption) the party met up with the dwarven ship, Soul of Winter, which brought them to where the ship had last been spotted to search for it, the Sandspine Shoals.

On the ship, the party faced off against Shadoris of Arachne and her arachnid minions, including a phase spider named "Petey" and a pair of ettercaps. She wielded the magical scimitar, which was taken from her once defeated. Later, they defeated ghouls in the cargo hold and retrieved the incredibly heavy and awkward magical metal box. Making things more difficult, a gargantuan octopus chose that moment to attack. After a torturous effort to get topside and signal their dwarven allies, they managed to escape.

Returning to Saltmarsh, the party returned the box to the prefect and did not even contemplate bringing it or the It turned out that the box held evidence point towards Oweland Family involvement in both the death of prefect's parent but the slaving plot the party had foiled when they assaulted the Sea Ghost.

The evidence included:

  • A written affidavit by one Tomas Nedio who swears he saw Tessa Oweland arguing with Petra Solmor in Cauldron about the sale of slaves. The latter telling the former that “You care more about money then about the Republic” and “Why would you send a potential rival free labor?” and the former was seen meeting with a man named Sandbalet.
  • A second affidavit from a shipwright confesses that the Dainty Prig (belonging to Owelands) was rechristened The Sea Ghost.

The prefect also confirmed the presence of the promissory notes, the party's share of which would come to 10,000 gps, but it would be some time before it could be retrieved.
